Bug-Byte

From what I've heard, this company was pretty big back in the early 80's, I think they held out until about 86, but I can't be sure. I think they had a lot of scuffles in management, in fact I think two of the people who founded Imagine games, the ill-fated company, walked out of BugByte just monthes before! I have a few of their games on original tapes, and there is an offer of a t-shirt with the BugByte logo on it - if you have one, I'd like a picture! :-)

Text-based backgammon game, its not really very interesting as dice games never usually are on the computer. Its only 2 player, so no huge feat of programming has been achieved..definitely not one for the collection ;)

A lame version of Missile Command, but this time with rockets, you guide the last rocket you fire, which kind of makes it hard, as there are too many bombs fired at you, and the bombs are too small for your rocket to hit more than one at a time. Don't play this, it is just plain annoying!

Cricket

A nice version of the game, in fact it is probably the only playable one on the Beeb! The graphics are a bit blocky, but generally nicely drawn, and the gameplay is at least good, focusing less on the simulation side of things than all the other Cricket games.

Dragon Quest

Adventure / RPG game, you have a chracter with various strengths etc but the main part of the game is set out like a text adventure. An early game (1982) from Bug-Byte and as such, not very good.

Dunjunz

This is probably the best game ever to come from Bug-Byte, however it still shows their weakness at developing a controllable game. Up to four players can play on this game, it is set in the dungeons of a castle, with you playing a longbow firing man. You have to shoot the monsters and recover the treasures. It is a very good idea, but unfortunately the controlling of the cross bow is very difficult, and more often than not you find yourself getting hit by the monsters whilst struggling to shoot them!

Exterminator

The classic Caterpiller game, rehased for the umpteenth time, this one is terrible, you have a less than zero chance of winning each level, because the centipede seems to reach the bottom of the screen so fast. Then it moves back up the screen at an alarming rate, should you have gotten out of the way quick enough, it is just too fast. Has to be one of the all time worst clones of Centipede!

Galaxy Wars

Another boring Space Invaders variant, this time with the most featureless graphics ever seen. They are also some of the smallest, and move much too fast in relation to the bullets from your gun. This makes it very hard to hit things, even at close range. Somehow this makes you think of the BBC's reputation for 'mediocre' games.

Hunkidory

A lovely platform game, this one has a lot of appeal. It doesn't have much originality, all you have to do is collect the torches on each level, killing baddies by using your shield as they collide with you, and dodging obstacles. It is quite well done though.

Ice Hockey

Released: Unknown

I think this is the only Ice Hockey game on the Beeb, probably because we just don't play it over here in England! I think it is pretty good, although I've never managed to score a goal! The graphics are nice, and it has a really nice tune to it. The only thing is it is a bit annoying when you just control one skater, who has to cover the whole of the arena!

Jack Attack

Released: Unknown

This one is actually quite good, it is a massive scrolling platform game, with nice graphics, and some good enough gameplay. You have to go around collecting the prizes, without crashing into snails, falling off high platforms and making the best of ladders and lifts which you need to traverse in order to complete the game. Looks to me as if it is based on Jack and the beanstalk, as all of the platforms look like they are beanstalks.

Megarok

Apalling version of the classic Asteroids game, this is made unplayable by the fact that your ship is almost totally unplayable, and even so, the rocks move around as if they're on drugs, way too eratic and much too fast. The best version of this is definitly Meteors by Acornsoft.

Probably one of Bugbytes last ever games, this was released in 1988, this title is only average. Its typical Beeb fare, dodge the arrows on a grid whilst trying to get all the bananas on the level. Its very difficult and is all about timing, its definitely worth a play though.

Oblivion

Another shoot-em-up, and yes, this one is also very boring. It is just so unoriginal, and lacks all the pace which would make it fun. You have to shoot off the maurading aliens, they move down the screen, and when they get near to you, start twirling and spinning to try and get away, they also home in on you, making everything doubly hard. It is very tedious, and there are so many other good games for the beeb.

Old Father Time

A mode 7 text adventure in which you are summoned to retrieve the Staff and Hourglass of Old Father time, and return them to him. Its quite playable, and would benefit from not being ALL IN CAPITALS but then again that was to save memory in them days!

Pirates In Space

Released: Unknown

This is a very playable game, probably one of my BugByte favourites! You have to protect the asteroids on the screen, which aliens try to steal, it is a bit like asteroids, only the rocks aren't moving. Even though it is only in mono, the effects are nice, especialy the explosions.

Plan B

Released: Unknown

This is one of their best games, you play a robot, sort of a cross between R2D2 and a fridge, you have to destroy all the computers on the level, and then make your way to the exit. It is all played in a high-res black and white video mode, and it works well, because (for once) the graphics look nice, and actually add to the gameplay. The only flaw is the fact that you can't shoot upwards or downwards, on left or right, which makes it hard to defeat the aliens in some of the rooms.

Plan B 2

Pretty darn fine sequel to a good first game, this has very nicely done graphics, still black and white, but nice and detailed. The game play may be just more of the same, and the same flaws remain, this is definitly worth playing, and even more so if you liked the first one!

Polaris

Poor game this one, you are in charge of the Polaris submarine and have to sink a certain amount of ships, its very basic in the graphics and also very annoying because gameplay has to stop when something else is going on like planes attacking. Must have been a very early game.

Roboto

This is a platform game, and it is actually quite good. You are a robot, and have to make it through the perils of a level filled with bad guys who shoot at you, and doors which move up and down, requiring sharp timing to intersect. This is quite enjoyable, and for some reason it always reminds me of the Robot from Short Circuit. The graphics are bad though, but at least the gameplay is there, which is lacking from so many of their other titles.

At last, a half decent shoot-em-up from Bug-Byte. In this one you drive a submarine around, and have to fight off the ships of the Sea Lord, who's territory you have just accidently stumbled into. It is at last played at the right speed, and the graphics are ok, if a bit confusing. At least this is worth a try, to see what the company is capable of.

Skyhawk

A game in which you fly a harrier jump jet and shoot other jump jets - this one seems unfinished as all that seems to happen is there are 2 other jump jets to kill. Does anyone know if this was ever released?

Space Invaders

A fair version of the classic game, at least this one doesn't try to be anything else. There's not much else to say, it is just another faceless copy, you can't really reccommend it over any other game with the name 'Space Invaders'.

Space Warp

Released: Unknown

Early game from Bug-Byte this is right from 1982 - originally it only worked on BBC's with OS 0.1! It's a Star Trek type game in which you have to control the ship and search out the Klingons. It has pretty basic graphics, just black and white and it isnt the most entertaining game!

Squeakaliser

Released: Unknown

You are a mouse in this game, and have to collect all keys on the level, whilst dodging the bad mice who will beat you up if you so much as touch them. Whilst this game is very straightforward, it has a kind of nice feel to it, although it can get boring after a while. It is one of Bug-Bytes better games.

Star Force Seven

Released: Unknown

An entertaining game, you are put in control of a star fleet, and have to scout out planets, shoot down other peope, and basically explore the galaxy. You play the role of a sort of General, and instead of actually flying the ships, you guide them all and tell the whole fleet what to do. Hence it is only really a text game, but it is very good fun to play, especially for would-be Captain Kirks!

Templeton

A very strange game, you have to get past a variety of monsters, the levels are quite big, but the only thing is, you seem to die for no reason at all. The graphics are low-resolution, but very nicely drawn, and the enemies are also quite interesting. It is by no means a classic, or even very good game, but maybe worth just one play!

Tennis

Released: Unknown

One of the only tennis games on the Beeb, this is pretty impressive, it is in a sort of pseudo 3D, but actually looks quite good. The one problem with it is that the computer is just too good! Once you get into the rally he will never miss the ball, a common AI problem in the 80's!

Tutankhamun's Revenge

Released: Unknown

Entertaining game, it's like a large platform game, you have to collect all the keys scattered around the levels and take them back to the bank. It's quite varied, there are lots of different types of puzzle, and the graphics are very slickly done. Well worth a blast!

Twin Kingdom Valley

This is a pretty good attempt at an adventure game, instead of detailed text you get some nice pictures, however these pictures aren't pre-rendered, and they have to be drawn at each visit to the location, making it slow going. It is entertaining though, and makes you wonder why they never made more text adventures, at least they don't have to have a control system!

Guess what? ANOTHER boring shoot-em-up, don't get me wrong, I love a good shoot-em-up, and i do mean a GOOD shoot-em-up, and this isn't one! The aliens move and shoot too fast, giving you little or no time to manouver. It is just so boring when you die every 2 seconds!
