Superior Software

The biggest Software produce/publisher for the BBC ever. In fact it is still going to this day, making it the only actively supporting BBC software house. It still sells titles, but no longer develops any. The company is now being run by Steve Hanson. In the early 80's it released bundles of classics, and every game seemed to be a good one. It has probably developed more games that most other publishers have today. It acquired Acornsoft in the late 80's, and gained the rights to sell their games, but now it seems that Acorn have bought the name back again. It has produced loads of individual titles, as well as 18 Play It Again Sam Compilations, 2 Acornsoft Hits Compilations, and 2 Superior Software compilations.

Shuttle docking simulator, not as fun as it sounds, this is an accurate simulation of a space dock with an orbiting space station. You have to control yaw, pitch, roll and forward engines to a high degree of accuracy in order to control the ship in to the station. It is very slow paced, but is quite fun once you get the hang of how things behave differently in space. The graphics are wire frame, and well done on the whole - although not exactly stunning they are functional.

A Question Of Sport

The game based on the quiz show, this is a great way to test your sporting knowledge! It is a bit out of date by now though! Basically you answer questions about sport, and try to beat the other team!

Airlift

In this game you control a helicopter, and have to rescue innocent civilians from a war zone, when their house is blown up by a tank, you must land and let the civilians board the chopper. Then you take off and land at the hospital, it is all great fun, but gets hard after a while.

Alien Dropout

Released: 1982

Author: Unknown

Download

A good shoot-em-up, in this there are giant alien moths invading, and you have to shoot them all! They slowly fill up the columns, and when a column is full, the moths come out of it, and attack you. You have to keep all the columns down to a minimum level, and there are 8 columns! It is very difficult, but fun to play, you can keep going at it for ages!

Around The World In 40 Screens

Released: 1987

Author: Unknown

Download

Another Repton game, this time there are 40 new screens, each with themed around a place in the world today, from Europe to Asia, it's all in there!

BMX On The Moon

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

The original game of riding along in a moon buggy, dodgin the ships overhead, shooting them, and jumping over craters on the moon. You have to be very two minded in this game, I suppose if you were good at rubbing your tummy whilst patting your head then you would be good at this! It has a nice sound when you shoot the aliens, sort of a coughing sound!

Ballistix

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

This game is strange, using an arrow which fires pellets, you must direct the ball into the goal of the opposing player. There are many obsticles to overcome, and it can be quite frustrating, but nevertheless it is great fun for 2 players.

Barbarian

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

The best ever BBC combat game - and just about the only one that lets you chop your opponents head off! This is a true classic for the BBC, you'll need quick reactions as you fight through many opponents and then Drax, the dungeon lord himself! The graphics are nice, medium res, but detailed, and the controls are spot on. Great for two players.

Barbarian 2

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

This is something of a disappointment, considering the brilliantness of the original. This is a scrolling beat-em-up, with you having to fight your way through the mazes, and on to the next level. The worst thing is the fighting, as you only fight Dinosaurs, which get very boring, it is not a patch on the original. You can also play as a female character in this, ensuring political correctness!

Baron

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

A great graphical adventure, this one has you playing a Baron, as you search for a way out of the castle. The graphics are nice, if a bit plain, but there are loads of puzzles to solve and it is fiendishly difficult. Not bad considering it is really a make weight. Only available on PIAS11.

Battle Tank

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

The old classic, well so they say, because I really hate this game. It is all very well with the nice wireframe graphics, but it really stinks, it is far too slow, and when you meet a tank, they almost always manage to blow you up before you line them up in your sites. Not one for the classics folder!

Bone Cruncher

Released: 1987

Author: Unknown

Download

This is a bit of a copy of Repton, so it is not exactly original, however it does add some interesting features to the game, and Repton fans will love it. You are in control of an animal (not quite sure what) and have to eat all of the bones, which are like the diamonds from repton. You also have to dodge the rocks (which have eyes!) and guide frogs around. It is good fun, and the animation is better than in Repton (in my humble opinion). It just doesn't have as much playability as Repton though.

Boris In The Underworld

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

A very early game from Superior, you are in control of Boris, who has journeyed to the Underworld to reclaim the possessions that the demons stole from him. It is a basic shoot em up game, you control boris, and can move around anywhere in the screen, except the walls keep closing in, and Boris and the Demons are forced into a smaller space, which makes it harder to kill them. If you destroy all of them on the level, one of the missing objects appears and you can collect it. It is a very average game, but I like it.

By Fair Means Or Foul

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

My favourite computer boxing game, this one I have also seen called 'Pro Boxing' but I can't remember who it was released by! You have to fight through the rounds, from amateur to world championship level, the graphics are great, the gameplay is excellent, and you can even kick each other in the nuts - what more could you want from a boxing game!

Camelot

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

Another Tony Oakden graphical adventure, this one is my favourite, mainly because of its setting, and also because it is the most impressive technically. There is water to negotiate, and also loads of baddies and villains to avoid if you want to collect the six money bags which are need to reach the 3000 point target which you need to complete the game. Great stuff, but only available on Play It Again Sam 9.

Centipede

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Superior Softwares conversion of the Atari game, this is a good version of the only game which has you shooting a centipede to bits! You have to shoot the sections of the centipede as it moves through the mushrooms, before it gets to the bottom of the screen and touches your ship. The graphics are ok, the sound is not up to much, but neither were they in the arcade version.

Chess

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

Early attempt from Superior, this is much like most other chess games around, its fairly good and the computer can play against you, the graphics are mode 2. Its quite interesting to play, but nothing more advanced than most of the other Chess games on the beeb.

Citadel

Released: 1985

Author: Unknown

Download

A really good arcade adventure, this one has it all, loads of tiny little animations, great graphics, and most of all, superb gameplay. You have to guide your wizard through the Citadel, collecting objects which you have to solve puzzles with, the ultimate aim being to escape the Citadel. Probably comes neck and neck with Castle Quest for being the best adventure of all time on the BBC Micro.

Citadel 2

Released: 1993

Author: Unknown

Download

A return to the classic, this was one of the last games released by Superior, sometime in 1991 I think, and I suppose it shows a bit. This game is not as polished as the original, somehow the graphics whilst being more elaborate just don't look right. However there's still plenty of playability in it!

Codename: Droid

Released: 1987

Author: Unknown

Download

This is also labelled 'Strykers Run Part 2' and is definitly a worthy sequel. There are some changes to the main game from the original, this time everything is set on a planet somewhere deep in space, and the graphics are not as good as the original. It is very enjoyable, you basically just have to shoot everything in sight and collect the power-ups, but it is very well done.

Colditz Adventure

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Set in the famous German prisoner camp, your task is to escape from it. It was the first adventure game I ever played, and it really made an impression on me, it isn't very detailed, but it is very fun to play. It has good character descriptions and is laid out nicely. Another one of the earlier games.

Cosmic Camouflage

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

The sequel to Acornsoft Meteors this one has a few additions, the most notable being that you can now completely disappear for a short time, to get the aliens of your tail. It is worth a quick play, I love the Asteroids style games, but definitly not a patch on the original. Only available on PIAS4.

Cosmic Kidnap

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Not a followup to Camouflage, but a completely new game, and from a much earlier period in Superior's history. This is a space invaders style shoot-em-up, with a twist. Your 3 ships are sealed inside some blocks, the aliens form on each side of this block, and move towards it one at a time, taking blocks away as they move back and forth. You have to shoot all the aliens before they remove all the blocks and get to your missile bases. It is an enjoyable variation of Space Invaders, and worth playing.

Crazee Rider

Released: 1987

Author: Unknown

Download

This is an interesting little game, mainly by the fact that it is almost identical to Overdrive, but this time with motorbikes. You just have to race around the various tracks on your motorbike, dodging the other bikes and trying to win the race. The graphics are good, and the bike handles well, and it is all in all a much more enjoyable game than Overdrive, mainly because it has a propert circuit to race along, and there is no time limit.

Crazy Painter

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

A reasonable conversion of the arcade game Amidar. You have to paint around the various boxes in order to fill them in, to make this harder there are monkeys which chase you, if you touch them then you die. The graphics are good and move fast, and it is a very playable and original game.

Cribbage

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Decent version of the timeless British pub card game. It plays well, and as long as you prefer playing computers to humans you'll like this game! One of their earliest ever games.

Cyborg Warriors

Released: 1991

Author: Unknown

Download

A change in style for Tony Oakden sees him producing a rather fine scrolling arcade shoot-em-up, the graphics are great, it moves superbly, and there is basically nothing to beat it apart from two games, Firetrack by Aardvark, and Nevryon by 4th Dimension, the two best shoot-em-ups, however, for someone who only ever made one shoot-em-up, Oakden really has done well with this game.

Darts

Deathstar

Released: 1985

Author: Unknown

Download

A cool game this one - it has loads of stuff to do, and the gameplay is fast and furious. You have to collect enough crystals to destroy the Deathstar, which is being created by the robots, when it is completed, the Deathstar chases after you, and you have to blow it up with the space bombs you collect. This is one of their earliest games, and is worth playing. Find it on Superior Collection II as well as separatly available.

Draughts

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Ok version of draughts, its very basic, but plays a good game. Was one of the first games they did, luckily they went on to much better things!

Elixir

Released: 1987

Author: Unknown

Download

A novel idea, but it just doesn't seem to have been pulled of with the usual Superior Software style, the graphics don't look like it is Superior, very mysterious. The game is original, you are a chemist who has accidently been shrunk, by eating some tablets of the wrong kind, and you have to search the chemists shelves, in your small form, and get the right pills. It is more dangerous though because there are things like dripping acid bottles and exploding sticks of make-up, which can all kill you!

Exile

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

The MOST amazing game ever designed by Superior, this is so brilliant, when you play it it completely blows you away with its open endedness and room for exploration. It is completely brilliant, the graphics are awesome, it has digitised speech if you have SWR, and the gameplay is out of this world. It is hard to find any faults with a game of this quality, it is so good you would think it was on a machine twice as powerful as the good old beeb!

Fairground

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Poor version of Carousel, showing that back when they first started, Superior were no match for the skilled arcade conversions of Acornsoft. This is very inferior to the Acornsoft version, so play that instead!

Froggy

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Superior's version of the great game, but this version still doesn't beat the Acornsoft Hopper! The graphics are good, although a bit sickly and the sound is good too. The only thing that is really not as good as the Acornsoft game, is that it just seems to be missing a tiny bit more of playability.

Fruit Machine

Released: 1982

Author: Unknown

Download

One of their earliest games, this is a standard, very simple, fruit machine simulator. You have to get as many credits as you can before running out, it is all down to luck really. The graphics and sound are minimal, although it is quite addictive - and won't cost you money per go!

Galaforce

Released: 1986

Author: Unknown

Download

THE best shoot em up ever, I really love this one, the music gets me humming along for ages, it is really fast, and their are loads of variations to the old Space Invaders style game. The aliens come around in a huge variety of formations, and they really push your skills to the limits, definitly worth getting hold of a copy.

Galaforce 2

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

More of the same in this action packed sequel - loads more formations of aliens, and more aliens themselves, and it also includes some really well designed Bosses. Only available on PIAS6

Galaxy Birds (Galaxians)

Released: 1982

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

The old favourite, and probably the first variant of space invaders. The only difference is that the aliens move and fly towards you sometimes. It was one of my favourite games when I first got my beeb, and I was thrilled when I rapped the score! Graphics and sound are minimal, this was one of their earlier games.

Gideons Gamble

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

Nice adventure game in mode 7, its not that complexed, but it was one of Superiors early efforts. One nice feature of it is the fact that you get little mode 7 teletext pictures every now and again. It's all set in the days of sailing, quite a good game really but not one of the best ever adventures.

Gnasher

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

Almost perfect arcade conversion of Pac-Man, this looks so similar to the Acornsoft version, it's a wonder no-one got sued! However, this is definitely one of the earliest games that Superior created, the graphics are spot on, must have been from about 1982.

Grand Prix Construction Set

Released: 1987

Author: Unknown

Download

I think this an ok game, nothing special, but it does have the added bonus of a construction set built into it, so you can design circuits and then race on them, which gives it a long lifespan. The racing is not really up to much, but with two players it is a good laugh.

Hostages

Released: 1990

Author: Unknown

Download

A highly original game, in this you take control of a team of expert commandos trying to infiltrate a building in order to kill the men who have taken hostages. The gameplay varies each level, the first one sees you dodging bullets in order to correctly position your men, when you do this you move on to the next level. In the second level you take control of three different commandos, who have to slide down the building on ropes, and break in at the correct point. There are more levels, such as shooting the baddies etc, and it makes for a really great game. This was one of the last games they made, and it sure was good, the graphics are nicely done, if a bit sketchy, and it has a nice tune.

Hunchback

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

A great classic, you play the hunchback, who has to get through the castles defenses to rescue the Princess Esmerelda. You have to dodge men with spears, rocks, jump on ropes, and watch out for pitfalls. A true classic in every sense of the word, it will keep you playing for ages, the graphics are cool and the sounds makes me laugh every time!

Hyperball

Released: 1990

Author: Unknown

Download

Superiors BreakOut clone, this one is nearly as good as Arkanoid, but is just beaten beause of Arkanoids excellent graphics, it is very impressive though. It has nice sound, and some great extras. You always feel as if it is just a cheap copy of Arkanoid though, everything from that seems to be replicated in this.

Invaders

Released: 1982

Author: Unknown

Download

Superior Software's definitive version of Space Invaders, this is the best version on the Beeb, but that isn't really saying much as it is not exactly and incredibly complicated game to do! It it still necessary though, as every platform should have this game on it - it's video game history!

Jack And The Beanstalk

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

A very strange little platformer, the graphics are nice enough but it just doesnt seem like a proper Superior Software game, it just feels quite tacky. Definitely not one of the hits then!

Karate Combat

Released: 1986

Author: Unknown

Download

A nice little fighter, you are a karate expert, and have to fight against a range of fighters. Loads of moves, and some excellent high-res animation make this one of the best beat-em-ups on the Beeb, and it is very tough. If anyone has any tips - please tell me!

Killer Gorilla 2

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

Superiors sequel to the classic Donkey Kong, I don't think this is as good as the original, you have to rescue donkey kong, you play baby kong, and have to negotiate the levels, filled with baddies. It has some nicely done high-res graphics, but it was always riding on the back of a much better game. It was renamed when put on compilation with Killer Gorilla - the old name was Zany Kong Junior.

Kix

Released: 1986

Author: Unknown

Download

A good game, this is a game in which you take control of a laser cutter, and have to cut away portions of the screen. All around the screen there are aliens who can get you when you use the cutter, you have to capture a certain amount of the screen, which varies each level, and when you have done so, you progress. Only available on Superior Collection II.

Ladder Maze

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

An early Peter Johnson game, this is not as good as his later ones, its basically a less advanced version of Acornsoft's maze, ie a 3d maze which you have to get out of. It looks ok, but its major problem is the time it takes to redraw the screen after you move.

Lost City

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

Text adventure, you have to search for the Diamond of Zandor, which is hidden in the Lost City. It's not too bad, more descriptive than, say, Colditz or Star Trek. It is actually quite a good game, although the story has been done to death. Worth a go.

Master Break

Released: 1991

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

A really good quiz game, themed on snooker, but none of the questions are on snooker, you have to answer specialist and general knowledge questions with tough time limits. As you answer questions correctly pot the balls, red ball questions are easier and have more time to answer, and black ball questions are hard and you don't get much time. This is a really good quiz game, the graphics are lame, but functional.

Missile Strike

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

The classic missile command game, nicely done for the BBC, I really like this version, the lines come down the screen towards your bases, and you to shoot the tip of the line to blow it up. When you have shot enough lines, you move on to the next level, the graphics are simple, but good, and the sound effects are cool. This is a really good game, one of my favourite early 'arcade' games.

Moon Mission

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

Early arcade conversion, this is the game where you have to manouver your ship through the asteroids to reach the people stranded on the planet below. This is an ok conversion of it, but it doesnt have the slickness of the Acornsoft version Meteor Mission. Not a bad effort though this is quite a rare game as well.

Mr Wiz

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

A Mr DO Clone, but definitly not as good as Micro Powers' Mr EE!, or the arcade version! You have to collect all the cherries on the level, whilst avoiding the baddies, who can follow you or dig there own pathways through the underground. It is ok, but the graphics are quite frankly very poor, and it has a couple of annoying features. Another rare case where Superior lose out.

Mutant Spiders

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

A charming little shoot-em-up, its quite easy, but its actually also got some original traits, such as a timer to complete the level, and the patterns in which the spiders fire their missiles. It may not be the most brilliant game of all time, but it certainly is a lot better than most of the games produced for the Beeb. Check out the authors home page http://www.btinternet.com/~trevor.lawford/mutant_spiders.html [Defunct] here.

Network

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Peter Scott usually creates this sort of game, and they are usually very well made, oh well, no change there then. Featuring his quirky style of character design, and nicely designed levels, this is a great game to play, it is fun, and very difficult. If you like arcade adventures which are more arcadey than adventurey, then this is a great game to play, but bear in mind, if you aren't good at this game, it is TOUGH!

Neutron

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

The Superior version of Light Cycles - from that film that sporned a thousand games, Tron. This isn't too bad a version, the graphics look quite good and it has the speed and required of this type of game. Worth a look, but there's tonnes of these kinds of games on the beeb!

Overdrive

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

Another racing game from Supeior, this time from their early days. I think this is a really good game, it has the feeling of speed, and doesn't care about straying away from reality, letting you drive along at ridiculous speeds! A nice range of levels, and a good 3d effect make this one of my favourites.

Palace Of Magic

Released: 1986

Author: Unknown

Download

A classic aracde adventure, with you playing a man who has angered a great wizard (whos name is an anagram of Citadel) this is supposedly better than Citadel - its certainly harder! This one has great graphics, and a good musical score, I'm not too good at it.

Pandemonium

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

A classic game by Peter Scott, master of the arcade adventure. It is quite manic, with you playing a little alien type thingy, and having to dodge all of the weird things you find around the level. It is quite fun, but can be very frustrating, it does have some really nice music though. It is basically a huge platform game, and it is VERY difficult.

Percy Penguin

Released: 1984

Author: Unknown

Download

One of their earliest releases, this is one of millions of clones, with you as Percy, you have to defeat the Snobees by pushing blocks of Ice over them, squashing them flat. When you defeat a certain number of Snobees, you win. This is highly addictive and entertaining, definitly the best version.

Perplexity

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

A sort of advanced Pacman game, you have to smash rocks to get powerups, whilst moving around a 3d version of a pacman style maze. There are monsters who follow you, and to get past different sections you have to move keys into the locks which open up. This has elements of Repton and Pacman but is not as good as either, it is still ok though, and the graphics are quite good.

Pipeline

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

I love this game, the music always manages to get right inside my head, and I start singing it, annoying my whole family! But now onto the plot, you are stranded on the sulphur rich moon of Io, and have to get off it, by working your way through the space station. There are massive levels, you have to collect all the sulphur, and complete loads of puzzles, it has great graphics and is highly addictive. I really love this game.

Pipemania

Released: 1990

Author: Unknown

Download Unavailable

One of my favourite puzzle games, this is an excellently designed game, and is extremely good fun. You are a plumber, and have to fix a section of piping together before the water starts flowing from it, you have to build the piping over as many squares as possible, and after a certain number of squares that the water flows through, you gain bonus points for extra squares. It doesn't really need good graphics, but this is presented extremely well with high-resolution used, and the sound is good, if monotonous.

Pontoon

Released: 1982

Author: Unknown

Download

A nice little version of the gamblers card game, basically you have to get as close to 21 with your cards as you can, or right up to 21. Whoever gets the higher score (not more than 21) wins the game. It looks like the other Superior card games, which is good. This was another early one.

Predator

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

From the smash hit Arnie movie, this is a more than decent game license. You take control of Arnie (although his team are not included in the game) and have to guide him past enemy soldiers, birds (!?) and other obstacles. The action is viewed from the side, with you having to pick up different weapons along the way so that the ammo can stay replenished. The graphics are good, and the gameplay is fun, the only bad thing is when the predator comes, before the last level, you just see his laser sights aiming at you, and it is hard to get away from them, almost unfair. Nevertheless it is a great game to play.

Q*Bert

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Superiors Contribution to the mountain of Q-Bert games that appeared on the BBC. This is no better than any of the other's, just as Space Invader games do not really vary much. You have to jump on all the blocks in a specially shaped playing arena, whilst avoiding all the aliens which bounce around the blocks.

Quest

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

A high resolution graphics adventure, this is quite a good game, but is very annoying as there are perhaps too many enemies to fight off as well as puzzles. It has some nice sound effects, and the puzzles are quite hard. It is probably one to play after you've finished the classic Castle Quest and Citadel games, and is nowhere near as good as Tony Oakdens other game, Star Port.

Qwak

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

A really weird game, you are a duck, and you have to collect all the keys on each level. The best thing is that you can jump from the bottom of the level, and end up on the top of the level. It is fun for a while, but soon gets repetitive. It is only available on PIAS10.

Ravenskull

Released: 1986

Author: Unknown

Download

A huge adventure game, in the same graphical style as Pipeline. You have to infiltrate Castle Ravenskull, collecting all the treasure, whilst getting through loads of extremely fiendish puzzles. Definitly one of the best Superior has ever done, it has great graphics, and a really good musical score. It is also hard, like Pipeline, and will keep you going for ages.

Repton

Released: 1985

Author: Unknown

Download

Probably THE most famous game ever done by Superior, it was the Super Mario of the BBC world, this is an all-time classic. You play the part of Repton, the humanised reptile, with a zest for life, and probably (by now) one hell of a diamond collection. The idea is simple, collect all the diamonds, avoiding the rocks, and dodging the evil monsters which hatch from eggs. One of my all-time favourites. Snap up a copy if you see one!

Repton 2

Released: 1985

Author: Unknown

Download

The sequel, and in my opinion the weakest, Repton game. This one drops the multi-level shinangans of the first games, and has one massive level, you have to collect all the pieces of letters, AND collect all the diamonds, and eat up all the soil pieces. This is just too hard, and has too many objectives, which makes it not as good as the other games in the series.

Repton 3

Released: 1986

Author: Unknown

Download

Superior hit back with an excellent second sequel, incorporating a really good idea, a level designer. This is even larger than Repton 1, and has a return to the standard level based format of the original. It has all the classic things, and some redesigned graphics, and more puzzles than ever before. Definitly one for the collection, strangely though, it is written by different people to Repton 1.

Repton Infinity

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

The last of the Repton games, this combines 4 new repton games and a designer. It is quite good, and the levels that have been designed are new and exiting. The game comes with loads of designs of new levels, and it is great fun if you love Repton, but newcomers should play through the original games first.

Repton Thru Time

Released: 1988

Author: Unknown

Download

Another installment in the Repton saga, this time the last. You play Repton in a challenging series of levels, through the different time periods, from prehistoric, to future. I really like this game, it is perhaps my favourite out of the pre-Repton 3 games, it is a shame he never made a come back!

Reversi

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

Download

Ricochet

Released: 1989

Author: Unknown

Download

This is a really original game, you have to guide Sprat, the amazingly bouncy character around the levels. It is an arcade adventure, you have to recover the five hourglasses of time, and restore them to Denzil, the rightful owner of the kingdom, who has been overthrown by the evil madman whose name I forget! It is a great game, particularly how you have to make Sprat jump up and down to traverse the levels. This was their last great Arcade adventure before the Beeb market faded out of existence.

Road Racer (Road Runner)

Released: 1983

Author: Unknown

A great little game, it is a sort of maze game, except set in a Racing Car, you have to drive around, collecting as many flags as possible, whilst the other four cars follow you, trying to catch up with you and stop you. You can use smoke screens to block the other cars movements, and it is generally a good fun game. The graphics are great for the period it was made in, and the gameplay is nice and original.

The basic aim of this game is to save yourself from the Mutants and Robots, by dropping rocks on them. All you have to do is run around the maze, with your rocks, and drop them. The maze is drawn simply with a sort of grid, and the monsters run around it. You can only move a certain amount before you die. It is not a very good game, but at least it is quite original.

Sim City

The modern classic town building game - this is purely amazing that they managed to fit this colossal game into 32k! You play the town planner, and have to manage a whole city, watching it grow and dealing with problems such as natural disasters, pollution, crime and others. It is massive and can be played for hours without boredom!

Smash And Grab

This one really reminds me of Acornsoft Firebug, but this time you are a thief, and have to collect all of the money which is pouring out of the bank which you have just broken into. Once you have collected a certain amount of money, you advance to the next level. Of course it is not that easy, you have to dodge the policeman who chases you, as well as a range of other obstacles - including flying cones!

Space Fighter

Released: 1982

This is one of the most annoying games ever - it doesn't work on a BBC B, but does on a Master, strange considering that it was written before the Master was designed! You fly along in your ship, blasting the aliens, and shooting the fuel dumps to gain fuel for your ship. The graphics are good, and so is the sound, but this is not a very detailed game as it was one of their earliest.

Space Pilot

One of my favourites, this puts you in control of an advanced time travelling plane, you have to shoot down planes, and then shoot down the big boss plane. You advance through time-themed levels, 1914, 1942, 1985, 2000, it is great fun, and also suprisingly hard on the latter levels. The graphics are nice and small, allowing you to see a large playing area.

Spellbinder

Another great graphics adventure from Superior, this time you are a wizard, hoping to make spells to defeat the evil ruler of earth. You have to find the ingredients to spells, and cast them in the correct places, in order to negotiate puzzles and obstacles. It is a huge game, with lovely graphics, all in high-res. The gameplay is good, but what would have been nice was a save game feature, as it takes a long time to get into, but only a short time to die!

Spitfire Command

A nice enjoyable shoot-em-up, you are actually inside the plane, and have to shoot as many of the invading Luftwaffe planes as you can before they shoot your plane out of the sky. The graphics are very simple low-resolution ones, but it is quite a good game, although the noise of the guns gets very annoying!

Spycat

A parody of basically every Spy game/film ever, this is a great to play arcade adventure. You are Spycat and have just been fired from MI4.5, you have to get your revenge by releasing the secret documents. The graphics and animation are some of the best I've seen, and with a main enemy called Clive Amstrad, who can resist a play of this game?!

Star Battle

Simple game for two players, you are each in command of a space ship (think the one out of Meteors) and you have to destroy each other. You have to successfully hit your opponent 20 times before he dies. Entertaining, if rather one-dimensional.

Star Port

A nice graphical game, sort of an arcade adventure, you have to find the five medical cases, and bring them to the top of the starport, where you can lift off in your space shuttle. You have to fight against the manic robots, and the many puzzles which require completion. It is great fun, and will last for ages, it has some great sound effects too. Only available on PIAS14.

Star Striker

A simple game, this is a space invaders variant, you have to defeat several different types of invader, then after a few levels dock with the rest of the command ship to gain points, and an extra piece of the ship, which enables you to fire more bullets at once. It has good graphics, yet simple, it was one of the early releases, but definitly a good one.

Star Trek Adventure

This almost disappeared from sight after its early release, I've never known anyone else who had it. It is a really good text adventure, with you playing Jim Kirk, having to fix the starship enterprise, with sections onboard the Klingon Ship, Enterprise and planets. One of the best features is Captain Spock, who takes on a great personality, and interacts with your character.

Star Warp

A fun little game, another early Peter Johnson, you are in command of the lasers on a ship and have to blow up the attackers. Its ok but quite repetitive, still it shows Peter Johnsons skill of programming the game off a bit, its technically quite good.

Stranded

Released: 1984

Text adventure with neat graphics to go alongside the text, it's also one of the only games that actually requires extra RAM inside the Beeb. Basically you have been stranded on an alien planet abd the aim is to get back to your space shuttle, then fix it. Its not incredibly complicated and the textual descriptions are somewhat lacking but the graphics are nice enough.

Strykers Run

An entertaining little sideways scrolling shoot-em-up this one, with you controlling the military guy who has to shoot everyone else who stands between him and the end of the level. You also have to destroy helicopters and dodge the missiles they shoot, you even get to control one of the helicopters! This has some of the best graphics I've seen on the Beeb, and surely is an great, if not a classic, game.

Superior Soccer

The only soccer game superior ever did, it is ok I suppose. I don't really like it that much, because I find it really hard to score a goal with the keyboard. It does have a management option though, and I thought the graphics were quite good, I love the commentator, who screams out exclamations like 'its a funny old game', all of course in a speech bubble - not actual speech!

Syncron

Released: 1988

I don't like this game at all, it is, in my opinion much to fast for its own good. It is a large shoot-em-up game, you have to shoot up as many things as possible, collect a certain amount of power orbs each level. It is very tough, and the graphics are done in a sickly purple and yellow. It is only available on Superior Collection 1.

Tempest

Released: 1985

One of their earlier games, this is a good version of the original game, which had to be special created using Vector graphics on the arcade monitor (Vectrex anyone?) It is highly original, you are in control of a ship and have to fly down a tunnel, shooting aliens and dodgin their laser blasts. It is played at high speed, in 3d, and the effect is great. Definitly worth playing again.

The Last Ninja

Released: 1988

A great 3d scrolling beat-em-up awaits players of this little gem. You can collect different weapons to kill the enemies with on each level, and the levels are huge brilliantly designed masterpieces. This is a really fun, and impressive beat-em-up come adventure game.

The Last Ninja 2

A return sees the Ninja this time battling through the streets of New York in this sequel, it is great fun, and well worth a play, especially if you have completed the first game and hunger for more!

The Life Of Repton

Another load of screens designed with the Repton 3 level designer, this time taking you through the life of Repton, from a baby to an OAP. It is quite good, the classic feel is still there, and is a lot of fun. You should play through the other Repton games first though, as these levels are tough.

Thrust

A classic, this is one of the best games on the BBC Micro. You play a simple little craft, who has to search through the caverns of planets, and collect the power core of the planet, which is done by attaching a beam to it, you then have to carefully go back through the level, and get off of the planet, you then beam into the next planet. I think this is excellent, the graphics are in high-res mode, with colourful, yet simple designs, and the way the craft reacts to trusts of the engine is excellent, it must have been designed by someone who really knows a lot about gravity and physics!!

Vertigo

Released: 1991

A great game, you are in control of a ball, and have to move it around an isometric level, avoiding all the traps, and timing movements just right so that they don't go wrong. If you fall off the edge then you die. It is presented in a high-resolution, 2 colour graphics format, and looks very nice indeed. The gameplay is great and highly original and it is one of the best games to play if you like action puzzle games. The sound is also very good.

Wallaby

Released: 1984

I think this is a cute little game, you are in control of mummy wallaby, whose baby has just been kidnapped by monkeys. You have to go through the level, punching all the monkeys (somehow the wallaby is a boxer!) and collecting the fruit, climbing ladders and trees. It is great fun, and the boxing part is great, it is a little repetive though.

One of the rare games where Superior lose out, in this case it is to Aardvark software, with their conversion Skirmish of the arcade game Joust. This is the classic bird flying jousting game, and is one of my all time favourites, mainly because of its originality, a real cracker of a game, but unfortunately not as good as Skirmish.
