Alligata

From Dave Palmer (29/1/2002):

I was interested to see your web site and all the info about Alligata Software! My name is Dave Palmer and I was in at the get go with Mike Mahoney who started Alligata (he is my ex wifes cousin and we were quite good friends) 1981/82 it started. I ran a business then as a manufacturers agent and manufacturer of Hi-Fi and acoutical equipment, I was an ex RAF aircraft engineer and technically up to speed on most things. So the computer business was a natural location to get involved in. I had spent some time looking at wholesale import and production of components as a possible new area of business for me, but when the vid game thing started in its early days I was more interested in this so started with Mike as a side line and a bit of fun. It became a time consuming business. I handled sales and PR function, but in truth I was involved at every stage from day one, devising designing, duplicating cassettes, checking artwork, packing, game testing, running programmers to and from school at lunch time (yes most of them were at school still and writing games).

I left in October 1986 and started Alternative Software with a guy called Roger Hulley :~/ I ran all the production side from my offices in Sheffield and sales were handled in Pontefract. I escaped from him in 1988 (literally!!) and set up Hi Tec Software, 100% my own company and the rest is history...... My involvement has to be well over 200 video games in 20 years - Ouch! Feelin old.....

FYI -Mike Mahoney packed in as MD of Alligata somewhere in 1988 I think it was, he started a market garden near Retford where he lived, Mike said to me he did not like how the industry was becoming and what it was doing to him as a person. Mike was a really nice guy. I do not know what he is doing now. His younger brother Tim took over Alligata and it was not long before it closed down and some titles were sold off to someone in the North East (trying to remember who?). Although they did not own some of the IP in some of the games to be able to do this!

Of the original programmers? (I missed some out but it is hard to remember everyone involved?).

Steve Evans - Last time I knew Steve was a very senior consultant at Arthur Anderson's the accounting firm. (Cosmic Asteroids, Lunar Rescue, Rocket Roger, Guardian, Who Dares Wins ++).

Tony Crowther - Working at Infograme Sheffield (formerly Gremlin). Blagger, Son Of, Loco, Trap........

Ross Goodley - Working at Fluid in Sheffield. This very young man told me Elite game could not be done on a Beeb? Two months later that game came out! A brilliant programmer none the less. Cant remember his gameography....

Chris Butler - Running a dev company in Sheffield. Transistors revenge, Fruity Freddy (Softspot titles), Then did Blagger goes to Hollywood. Chris went on the do the famous Putty games on NES and SNES for System 3.

Marcus Altman - Marcus was Chris's original partner. Marcus went to college to become either an optician or an opthalmic surgeon???

Not all of the above is complete..

The 80's were great, a new industry, great fun, never knew quite what would happen next with it, no BIG corproate businesses to start out with, it was a fun time.

They also made one compilation, Fistful of Fun.

3D Space Raider

A pretty poor game this, it is sort of an arcade version of Elite, but the graphics are much more bland and there are no actual 3d objects as such. It is ok if you like shoot-em-ups, but there is much more fun to be had with other games. The sound is actually quite good on this one though!

Blagger

This was their biggest hit, it is a simple game, in the same vein as Manic Miner, the objective is to collect all the keys from each level. It is simple and enjoyable. They never really repeated the quality they showed in this game, hence the number of sequels to this.

Bug Blaster

This is a rather good conversion of Centipede, in fact it is probably the best on the BBC Micro, it has all the speed of the original arcade version, and some nice sound effects. In case you don't know, the object of this game is for you, a small little pod, to shoot at the centipede, blasting away its many segments, when you do this you win the level. All the time the centipede is moving through the mushrooms (it turns whenever it hits one) and downwards. If it reaches the bottom of the screen you die.

Chichen Itza

A weird game, I'm not really sure what you have to do, but it seems that you have to collect all the items on the level, by walking up and down stairs, and collecting the items. You also have to avoid the enemies in the way.. The game is nicely presented in a high resolution two colour mode, which makes it a bit dull, but nontheless still good. The sound effects are also good. The name of the game comes from a Mayan archaeological site in Mexico which features a stepped pyramid.

Contract Bridge

Mode 7 bridge game - plays with a computer opponent. I dont know much about bridge but it appears to be a fairly early (1983) game for the Beeb, and as such only uses text without any graphics, whether or not it plays a good game I don't know.

Cosmic Asteroids

Released: Unknown

Asteroids clone, this is fairly good, about as good as Meteors. The only annoying thing is that the flying saucers which fly around are deadly accurate and about half the size of the smallest asteroid pieces!

Crown Jewels

Early game from Alligate, I think this was only ever released on the Electron. Its fairly simple, and the worst thing is it takes a long time for the program to do anything. I think the object is just to collect various treasures that you find scattered around the game world.

Dam Busters

This is a really good idea for a game, a sideways scrolling bombing game. You are in control of the famous Lancaster Bomber, armed with the deadly bouncing bomb, which you must bounce across the water and into the dam, blowing it up. You are under attack all the time from planes and guns on the ground, one neat idea is that with the press of a key you can choose which way you shoot, front or back, a nice addition. The graphics are very Defender like, but somewhat more colourful.

Diamond Pete

Terrible Repton/Boulderdash clone, it looks awful, handles like a pig and is just a complete rip off!

Eagle Empire

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

Download

A fairly normal space invaders clone, with the added fact that you also have a key to control your shield, which will appear for a short amount of time, and is alien proof. The aliens move in interesting patterns, sometimes slowly sometimes fast. It doesn't have a lot going for it, but I suppose it would be one of the better clones around, but nowhere near the best.

Ebony Tower

Released: Unknown

A fairly sophisticated text adventure in which you have to find and destroy a mysterious dragon in order to gain a gem to se the king of the realm free. Pretty standard script then, it has a two word parser and uses mode 7 text only. Not a bad play.

Fistful Of Fun

One of only 3 compilations they made, this contained: Tarzan, Bugblaster, Uncle Claud, The Garden Game (Growing Pains) and 3d Space Raider.

Fruit Machine

Released: Unknown

Early game from Alligata, frlom 1982. This is quite good, the graphics are ok but nothing special, as they are in low res mode. It does tend to give you a high amount of nudges though, and the novel feature about this one is that you can choose how much money you want to start with.

Growing Pains

A very strange game about gardening of all things. You have to water the soil, and produce plants which the bees polinate, whilst all the time avoiding the meanies who chase you around the garden. It is an enjoyable game, with lots of things to do, you always have to keep an eye on the water level of your watering can, and have to refill at the tap. The graphics are good, in a low-res mode, and it does not get too repetitive.

Guardian

A brilliant conversion of Defender, this has to be the best I've seen, possibly even a match for the great Acornsoft Planetoid! It has nice, big, bold graphics, and the gameplay is every bit as good as the real arcade machine. The laser fires the same way, it is an extremely brilliant game - play it now.

Hell Hole

Electron only? This is a fairly playable game in which you have to rove around the gamescreen in your tank, trying to get various items. It is like a version of Repton but all laid out really small on one screen, its not bad at all.

Lunar Rescue / Space Rescue

Was this released under two different names or is one version a pre-release? Good version of Meteor Mission this one plays well and has nice big chunky graphics which look well designed. It is a good fun game, this is one of my favourites of the arcade conversions.

Monaco

A good racing game, it is just simple little upwards scrolling game, very easy. The road slowly gets thinner, so your reactions have to be quicker all the time. Another weird thing is that it seems to be Formula 1 cars that are racing, yet the ambulances which try to crash into you, actually are moving faster!

Neanderthal Man

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

This is probably one of their worst games, all you have to do is knock the apples to the bottom of the screen, which is presented in very bland graphics, whilst dodging the enemies that surround you. It is not very original, and the idea is extremely boring, making a cup of tea would be much more fun!

Night World

Released: Unknown

An exploring game, set in what looks like caverns. I am not exactly sure what you have to do, perhaps get out? Anyway, your character sometimes changes shape, a bit like in Micro Powers Imogen, first you are a man, then a dragon, which can jump higher. It is an ok game, the graphics are a bit rough around the edges, and there is not much space to move about, but it is worth some attention if you like this sort of game.

Olympic Decathlon

Probably my favourite Alligata game, this is a classic thrash the keys game, in which you can take part in 8 events, long jump, 100m sprint, pole vault, hurdles and more. The graphics are really nice and colourful, and the whole thing is great fun. I wish there were more games around like this now - they seem to have died out. It is probably one of the best athletics games on the Beeb.

Roboman

A right ripoff of Atari's Robotron, this is nowhere near as good as the classic arcade game, for a start the number of keys is halved, you can no longer separatly move and fire the gun, and the graphics have a lot of flicker, sometimes making the robots disappear! All you have to do is shoot all the enemies on each level, whilst they chase after you. It is an ok attempt at the classic game, but unfortunately nothing more.

Son Of Blagger

This has to be one of the slowest games on the BBC Micro, it is almost unbearably slow, and nothing like the classic original. The playable area is viewed in about 1/10th of the screens actual size, so you get a very letter box shaped view, and the game is just awful. I don't know how they could have released this, considering all their other releases.

Spitfire

Released: Unknown

Spitfire plane simulator, not a very impressive game, the graphics are ok but it is quite slow. Flight simlators were never the beebs scene really, apart from the fabulous Aviator.

Starship Discovery

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

Download

A very complexed simulator of a starship, this one is definitly one for the strategy fans. It has about 10 pages of instructions, and for a BBC game, that is huge. However it is quite satisfying to be playing something this complicated, and there is lots of fun to be had. The graphics are generally good, but there is barely any sound. It is quite hard to get into, so you have to persevere.

Tarzan

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

I don't like this game, it is just very awkward to play. You basically have to manouveur your way through the forest, avoiding snakes, climbing on ladders and taking care not to die. It is very hard to manouveur Tarzan around the platforms, making it frustrating and boring - definitly not worth playing.

Ultron

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

Another space invaders clone, but with a difference - you have a limited amount of misses, and then you die. It is very hard not to miss, and this kind of reminds me of Superior Softwares Star Striker, or maybe they copied Alligata? There are many alien formations, but ultimately it is nothing more than the original Space Invaders.

Uncle Claude

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

Download

Another bad game, this one has you as Uncle Claude, who has to push the collection of items, such as plugs and cassettes, onto a converor belt at the bottom of the screen, once you have done this to all of the items, you have to collect the key and move on to the next level. It is extremely boring, although it looks and sounds ok, it really stinks in the gameplay department. Not reccommended.

Videos Revenge

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

Download

A good shoot-em-up, this is a vertical scrolling one, and the difference is is that you can stop moving if you want to, or speed up. It is very smooth running, and the graphics are good. The only bad thing about it is that the ships are not very varied throughout the game, and they don't come fast enough.

Web Runner

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

A really naff game in which you are in control of a spider, you have to run around the web killing all the other spiders on it, it is really hard to control, because you can only follow the strings of the web, and you'll be dead before you know it. The graphics are poor and sound is annoying, stay away from this game at all costs!

Who Dares Wins 2

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

This is one of their biggest games, it is set during world war two, and you are in control of one of the soldiers, it reminds me of Elite's Commando, although it is much slower, and not as good. The graphics are a lot better though, but the sprites are smaller, overall it is not as enjoyable, and you often get stuck for no reason.

Xanadu

Text adventure, this one is obviously quite large and seems to be a sort of version of the old 'Adventure' game, you have to collect treasures and return them to the central location (a cottage). Its ok, quite detailed and playable really.
