Tynesoft

Probably the only Geordie software company ever! These guys really did make some good games, they specialised in the sports area, but also made some other games as well. Most of their sports games are to do with athletics or football, they never really made any others.

This is a very bland game, you are in control of an alien pod, and have to shoot the missiles which come across the screen, which is actually 3 physical screens wide. It is quite boring, all you have to do, is wait for a missile to come along, and shoot it, then make sure your fuel doesn't run out, if it is running out, then head back to base! The graphics are ok, nothing special, but it just seems so out of character for a Tynesoft game!

Auf Wiedersein Pet

Very early Tynesoft game - and not really very good at all. It revolves around the brickies from Newcaslte in Germany going about what builders do best. The graphics aren't really very good and you'd be hard pushed to understand what the whole thing is all about anyway!

Beverly Hills Cop

The licensed game of the brilliant film, this doesn't quite live up to the film itself. It is a driving game, if you've played Chase HQ, then you'll know what I'm talking about, and you get to control the car, you play Axel Rose. You have to shoto a number of different vehicles off the road. The worst thing about it is that it the roads are completely empt apart from the odd car, and when one does come along, all you do is shoot it and continue! The graphics are not bad, bur the colours used are horrible!

Boulderdash

The inspiration for Repton, although on the BBC this game actually got converted by Tynesoft after Repton had become a smash hit. With smaller sprites and less technical puzzles this is definitely not better than Repton, but it does play well and there are some good graphical effects added. Repton could have been much less of a success if this was released earlier, play it an see.

This was mostly available on the Electron only, and contains some interesting games, it was one of the last released for the Electron. Shooting features heavily, its a good set of games, in contrast to the sporting collections they mainly produced. Graphics are fairly good, up to the usual Tynesoft standard.

Another Tynesoft great, this one is made up of lots of little sub-games, its great fun and provides plenty of keyboard bashing! (which is ok on an emulator, but the beeb keyboard are getting on a bit now!)

Commonwealth Games 86

A good athletics game, the graphics are neat, there is a wide variety of events, swimming, running, shot put, and more. The graphics are in the low-res mode, but are colourful and very clear. The only thing is that it is too hard to win some of the events, with all that finger tapping you actually feel as if you are running the race yourself! Strong finger muscles required!

Future Shock

One of the only non-sports games, this is a graphics adventure, yuo are a bouncy little object, and have to go around doing the normal adventure game stuff. Not bad, but it just doesn't have the interest level to keep you going. The graphics are up to Tynesofts' usual standards, but graphics alone do not make a game.

Goal

A poor version of Matchday, the game moves a lot quicker, but it is way too hard to play against the computer, and the graphics just don't look anywere near as good as Matchdays. It does have more options, but what is the point if the gameplay is not there! One strange thing is that the graphics are nearly drawn identically to the ones in Matchday!

Ian Bothams Test Match Cricket

Released: Unknown

This is probably one of the only Cricket games on the BBC Micro, and unfortunately it does nothing to enhance the reputation of cricket for being an exiting game. The graphics are as usual very good, but the way cricket is played it does not lend itself to a computer version. It was one of their earlier games (1986) but still that is no excuse.

Indoor Sports

The BEST sporting game I have ever played, bar football ones. This is a really good idea, and the games in this really are converted well to the computer format. There is Table Hockey, Table Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling and Darts. Not one of these games is anything less than superbly playable on your own, and excellent fun with another player. Table Tennis is really fun, you can have a blast on Table Hockey, with some really good ralleys, the whole thing is just pure fun. Even better still, none of the events require you to rapidly tap the keys on the keyboard!!

Jet Set Willy

Released: Unknown

This is another classic game from Tynesoft, it is great fun, sort of like Manic Miner, but with a multiple screen format, which you can go back to at any time. The idea is simple, collect objects whilst dodging various items and carefully moving through the screens. The graphics are good, with cute little sprites, and the gameplay is nice and varied. If you like Manic Miner - you'll LOVE this.

Jet Set Willy 2

More screens of fun, this time all the screens are different, but the objective is the same. The graphics haven't changed much, but that can be considered a good thing as they were already good enough in the first game.

Megaforce

Bog-standard shooter, this is very average, it plays well enough, but you would expect more from Tynesoft than just a big chunky shooter like this. It is also quite easy because the ships are so big, it doesnt take much skill to hit one. Not their finest hour.

Mouse Trap

Released: Unknown

Platform game, you are a mouse and have to collect all the food on the level which is dangerously populated with moving tea cups and dangerous falls. The graphics are ok, distinctly Tynesoft, low res stuff. It is a bit of a cross between Boffin and Manic Miner. Not a bad game, but nothing above average.

Oxbridge

Good adventure game which uses mode 7 to bring teletext pictures to the traditional text adventure. The parser isn't that advanced but the pictures do make up for it. The game is set in the famous Oxford university, it is a good adventure and well worth playing.

Phantom

Released: Unknown

This is a nice little shoot-em-up/adventure game, you are a ghostbuster, and have to go around the haunted house, shooting all the ghost with your laser blaster, whilst being careful not to bump into them.. If you do then your heart gets faster by 1 beat each time you bump into a ghost, if it gets to 100bpm (from 70) then you die! It is a highly entertaining, though not entirely original game, and worth playing, the graphics and sound are excellent as usual from the Geordie codies.

Rig Attack

Released: Unknown

A simple little game, and not bad either. You are in control of a Helicopter, and have to stop the Oil Rigs being attacked by submarines (maybe they're Greenpeace subs?) you can shoot at them, but you have to get pretty close to the water for your bombs to be effective, and then you might crash into a rig! The graphics make a change for a Tynesoft game, as they're High Resolution instead of the normal Mode 2 or 5. Quite addictive, but also hard!

Saigon

Released: Unknown

Another Commando style game, in this you are taking part in the Vietnam war, and have to shoot down everything that moves in the jungle. The game is superior to Commando because it has a less clutered screen, there are less people around to get in the way, but they fire much faster. The games graphics are also more slick and slightly better.

Space Caverns

Released: Unknown

Quite a decent game, although it is really just Thrust without the realistic physics. You have to guide your craft through the caverns, the graphics are ok nothing special, it really does owe a lot to its Superior Software version though!

Spy Vs Spy

Released: Unknown

One of the most brilliantly original games ever created, it is a shame that a more modern version hasn't been produced. In this game, the screen is split into two halves, and you have to control a cat, running around a building looking for items, whilst trying to dodge the other spy cat who is planting traps for you when you look behind or in things. Of course you too can plant traps for him, and it is really hilarious when you watch him explode after detonating your time bomb, or shooting himself by pulling the picture off the wall which you hid a gun behind! You can play this over and over again and not get tired!

Summer Olympiad

Released: Unknown

This is probably Tynesofts worst sports game, it isn't all that bad, but it doesn't live up to the standards created by their other games in the sports categories. The graphics are up to the usual standards, but the gameplay and choice of events just don't mix well, Clay Pigeons Shooting, Fencing, Triple Jump and Diving. Not as bad as some sports games, but definitly not up there with the best.

Supergran

Released: Unknown

This is a text adventure, written by of all people Brian Howarth! The guy who wrote many of the Topologika games! You play Supergran and have to save people whilst watching out for Scunner Campbell, the evil enemy of Supergran. If you live in Britain this is obviously derived from an old television series, it's pretty good all in all.

Superman

Released: Unknown

The super hero in a licensed version. The game is a mixture of playing styles including shooting and flying. You have to save the planet (as usual) with your super powers. The game has nice graphics, especially in the loading screens and of course that famous music is included, all done particularly well on the old beeb!

The Big KO

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

The only sports game that they completely mucked up, it is a very annoying game, mainly because you can never seem to get a punch in the right place, and the computer always beats you because of it. Definitly not worth playing with one player, but it is ok with two players. You'd be much better off taking a look at Superior's By Fair Means Or Foul for a good boxing game.

Trek 2

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

Another Star Trek game - how did they get away without having a license to do this? This is probably the best one on the BBC, the graphics are nice and detailed, but it lacks the sort of gameplay that a game like this deserves, it doesn't stray away from the coordinate based strategy type gameplay of all the other Star Trek games (barring Superior's Star Trek Adventure)

US Drag Racing

Released: Unknown

Author: Unknown

A drag racing game, this is probably one of their worst games, Drag Racing is a boring sport, mainly because it is against one other car, and they just go in a straight line for a few metres, hardly thrilling stuff. This does nothing to add to the massive thrill (yeah right) of watching the actual races, you just have to win against the computer. The graphics are nice, but the gameplay stinks!

Vindaloo

Released: Unknown

A rip-off of Bug Eyes by Audiogenic and Bug Eyes II by Icon, this is the same game idea, with different levels and a different character. This is the most unorginal game you can think of. The graphics are great, but who cares if the game is not as original? The gameplay is not even the same as in the other games, it is more uncontrollable and annoying.

Winter Olympiad 88

Released: Unknown

Their later attempt at a Winter Sports game, this one was a much better attempt, mainly because the range of sports that are done are much more adaptable to computer games. There is speed skating, two-man bob and a host of other events, the graphics are good, and the finger-tapping parts are kept spaced out and not too hard on the old finger muscles.

Winter Olympics

Released: Unknown

This is not too good, the graphics are up to the usual standard, but the events are very poor, and you have to work even harder at the keyboard than usual! Perhaps having a finger tapping system for this game, especially with skiing, was not a good idea.
