Melbourne House

Formed by two australian friends, this company soon became one of the top companies in the world. They were bought by Virgin in the late 80's, but then the name was dumped and the same people who started it bought the name back, they now produce software freelance for Austrlian software companies. They are probably most famous for starting off the whole one on one beat-em-up genre.

A rather buggy conversion of the classic 'Adventure' game, the first of its kind, its playable, and as the original was pretty basic it converts well to the Beeb, but other companies, notably Level 9, have done this better.

Comedy text adventure, based on the book Alice Through The Looking Glass. It's quite funny, the object being to become as drunk as possible. Melbourne House were always so good at original and truely funny games, and this loses none of its wit and humour since it was first released, definitely worth a play.

Third text adventure from brilliantly funny authors Peter Jones and Trevor Lever, this is all about those classic stereotypical gangster types, you have to commit a big crime which will leave you with enough money for the rest of your life. It is well worked, and very original, just like Terrormonolis and Hamstead. There is even a song on the other side of the tape for you to listen to - by the authors!

You have to guide a gyroscope over rough terrain, making sure it does not fall off any of the cliffs or crash into the other gryroscopes and monsters. It is great fun to play, but very hard, and you soon find yourself having to control the speed of the Gyroscope very carefully, to avoid it picking up to much momentum, highly original addictive fun.

This is a really good text adventure, you have to rise through the social rankings, from unemployed to high class, by wearing the right sort of clothes, making money, and doing and saying the right things. It is highly original, and great fun to play, although some of the puzzles are a little unfair.

A very buggy adventure game, but not half bad given a chance. This was the most popular of all time on the Spectrum, and it was actually an advanced version which was released on the BBC, albeit minus the pictures that were in the spectrum game. It is loosly based around the book, the worst thing about it being the fact that the whole thing is like a big maze, and you never know which direction you have just come from. It is quite difficult and will take a while to beat.

This game originally came in three parts, following the three books, The Fellowship of The Ring, The Two Towers and The Return Of The King. These games are enourmous in size, and are packed full of detail from the books. You can even choose to be different characters from the book, such as Frodo, Pippen, and others. The only bad thing about this game, is that it takes a long time for the text to be displayed on the screen, which is annoying if you want to get somewhere quickly!

The archive version requires the ROM Tape To Disk 1.00y to be loaded in to the emulator/BBC's SWR to work.

A very novel idea for an aventure game, which is usual for Melbourne House, they were/are a very creative software house! In this game, you have gone on holiday to Spain, and have to take 10 photos to prove it. You cannot just take any old photos, as they must have details of your location in them. It is a great change from the collecting treasure, rescuing people story lines that most text adventures have, and as usual with this software company you get more than the minimum amount of text description, a must play for any adventure fan!

The game that started the Beat-em-up revolution, this was a ground breaker, with one player against the other you had to defeat each other. It was basically a pretty basic affair compared to some other beat-em-ups, but it is stylishly done and the gameplay is good. The graphics are nice low-resolution and move well, this is probably one of their more famous games, especially to Speccy (ergh!) owners.
